Zowie G-SR II & G-SR-SE Grey Mouse Pads: A Comprehensive Review for Gamers

When it comes to proving a product’s excellence, time is the ultimate judge. Since its debut in 2015, the Zowie G-SR mouse pad has stood the test of time, maintaining its relevance in the competitive gaming scene for over eight years.

According to the ProSetting database, 21% of the 545 registered CSGO professional players still rely on the G-SR series in tournaments. This enduring popularity speaks volumes about its quality.

Today, we’re diving into the latest upgrades: the ‘Zowie G-SR II’ and the ‘G-SR-SE Grey’. Can these new iterations refine an already iconic design? Let’s find out.

G-SR II: Familiar Yet Refined

As a long-time G-SR user, switching to the G-SR II felt both nostalgic and fresh. The moment I slid my mouse across it, the signature G-SR control-oriented texture was unmistakable—smooth and consistent across both X and Y axes.

However, there’s a subtle difference: the G-SR II feels slightly slicker than its predecessor. In terms of feel, the G-SR II remains a control-focused pad with a slightly gritty texture.

It sits comfortably between the original G-SR (more ”dryness”, or “grippy”) and the faster G-SR-SE, leaning closer to the G-SR’s DNA.

Compared to my experience with the Huaying ACE (a coated pad I reviewed previously), the G-SR II eliminates the “cloth-grinding” sensation of the original G-SR. Instead, it offers a faint, plush-like softness—think sliding your mouse on a fleece-lined hoodie rather than a standard sweatshirt.

This upgrade makes it more comfortable for extended gaming sessions without sacrificing precision.

Durability Boost: Enhanced Weave Density

Zooming into the surface texture reveals that the G-SR II uses a similar weaving technique to the G-SR but with noticeably higher density. This tighter weave likely contributes to that plush feel and promises improved durability.

For a “consumable” like a mouse pad, this means the G-SR II should maintain its hand-feel far longer than the original, making it a worthy investment for serious gamers.

Softer Base, Better Lay-Flat Experience

Another upgrade lies in the rubber base. The G-SR II’s natural rubber is softer and more pliable—press it with your fingernail, and it gives more easily than the G-SR.

This high-elasticity rubber retains its shape even after repeated folding, allowing the pad to lay flat straight out of the box—no need for weights or flattening time. Unlike my old G-SR, which had slight edge curling when new, the G-SR II delivers a seamless setup experience.

However, this softer base has a trade-off: on uneven desks, the G-SR II may conform more to imperfections than the firmer G-SR, potentially affecting flatness.

If your gaming setup is on a perfectly level surface, this won’t be an issue.

Size and Consistency

The G-SR II retains the standard 470 x 390mm dimensions, though slight cutting variances (up to 10mm) may occur. My unit was marginally larger than my G-SR—about the size of a logo—but this doesn’t impact performance.

Moisture Resistance: A Game-Changer

One of the G-SR’s long-standing criticisms has been its lack of moisture resistance. In humid conditions, the surface turns sticky and sluggish, rendering it nearly unusable.

Living in dry northern weather, I couldn’t replicate southern humidity, so I took an extreme approach: spraying water directly onto both pads.

The results? The G-SR II’s water absorption is astonishing. While the G-SR retained small water droplets on its surface, the G-SR II soaked it all in, spreading it out evenly.

Hand-feel-wise, the G-SR II barely changed—mouse movement remained smooth, though the plush sensation faded, reverting to a standard cloth-like texture with a hint of dampness on skin contact. The G-SR, as expected, became a drag—mouse movement felt like pulling against a brake.

After a short drying period, the G-SR II had only a small damp spot left, while the G-SR’s wet area lingered slightly larger. This upgrade in moisture resistance is a massive win for players in humid climates.

G-SR-SE Grey: A Fresh Look, Same Speed

Launched alongside the G-SR II, the G-SR-SE Grey introduces a sleek new colorway while adopting the same upgraded rubber base and weaving process. Its moisture resistance matches the G-SR II’s, making it equally reliable in damp conditions.

The G-SR-SE series has always been faster than the G-SR line due to its surface pattern. The Grey version maintains this signature slickness—identical to the original G-SR-SE and its red “Chi” variant. If you’re a fan of the G-SR-SE’s speed, this grey edition is a seamless swap.

The Edge Issue Persists

However, the G-SR-SE Grey inherits a familiar flaw: its stitchless edges. Over time, the left and right sides tend to curl upward—a quirk present since the G-SR-SE’s inception. While this doesn’t hinder performance, it’s a minor aesthetic annoyance for perfectionists.

Final Verdict: Should You Upgrade?

The ‘Zowie G-SR II’ is a comprehensive evolution of the original G-SR. It retains the control-oriented feel that pros love while addressing key pain points—improved moisture resistance, enhanced durability, and a softer, more comfortable texture.

It’s like pouring new wine into a familiar bottle. The ‘G-SR-SE Grey’, meanwhile, offers a faster alternative with the same upgrades, perfect for those who prefer a slicker surface.
